Saint John the Baptist

Among the exhibited works, Friedlander noticed a small painting by Geertgen tot Sint Jans, depicting John the Baptist in the Wilderness. Friedlander was extremely impressed by this charming painting, he wrote immediately to Bode in Berlin.

Bode, who desperately wanted to purchase a Geertgen tot Sint Jans painting, instructed Friedlander to do whatever was necessary to acquire the painting for the Berlin Picture Gallery.
